Monthly Top Five - December

Hey, remember the What's Weekly Top 5 feature? So do we. The only problem is that it rarely came on a weekly basis, so we're switching gears. In  High Fidelity, the characters compare their top fives in a variety of categories. Being big fans of both the film and novel, we here at the What bring you our Weekly Monthly Top Five, a feature focused on five fantastic things that you should become familiar with.

Reasons to Visit Philadelphia in 2012

The City of Brotherly Love is a fantastic destination for arts and culture. With a great selection of museums, galleries, and theaters, there is no shortage of fantastic cultural institutions to choose from. While many flock to New York for theater or Washington for museums, Philadelphia has the best of both worlds. In 2012, several exciting events and exhibits are scheduled to be the highlight of Philly's cultural calendar.


5. Philly (Insert Fun Thing Here) Week - Chances are that no matter where your interests lie, Philly has a week for that. During Restaurant Week one can sample a variety of delicacies from the city's stellar selection of top-notch dining establishments. Fashion Week comes twice a year and boasts the best of Philly fashion. After taking a sabbatical in 2011, we can only hope it returns in 2012! If not, one can always find comfort in Beer Week. Beer Week is likely my favorite of all the weeks, as it is the perfect way for Philly's excellent roster of brewers to show their stuff.


4. The Festival Circuit - Philadelphia has become a hotbed for a variety of festivals over the years. With fests celebrating Film, Craft Beer, and all things folksy leading the helm, there are two somewhat newer festivals that lead the pack. In only its second year, the Philadelphia Science Festival looks to be at the top of many to-do lists after a strong debut in 2011 (as discussed by the What here). Perhaps the most anticipated of the many festivals offered in Philadelphia, is the Live Arts & Fringe fest. With a brand new headquarters and an ever-growing roster of participants, the Fringe is always a fantastic fest.

Every so often, Primer Magazine publishes a feature called the Get Up. Usually focused on a season or a situation, this is the perfect guide for guys who are trying to dress a bit better. I mentioned how I changed my style at the outset of 2011, and articles like the Get Up were a handy way of doing so. The most recent post highlights what to wear on an early winter Wednesday.

Tie Snug

You're out on the town, looking snazzy, and having a good time. Inevitably, during said good time, the tie that is really making your get up work has slid out of place and it's looking a little sloppy. Or maybe you are working a long day, and the boss wants you in a 4PM meeting. You forget to tighten your tie and suddenly you are looking a few steps shy of the professional appearance you were sporting that morning. There is always the option of tightening your tie several times throughout the day, constantly checking the mirror to see how it looks, and devoting way too much time to your neckwear in general. Or you could just skip all of that and get yourself a Tie Snug.

Fashion Street: Broad St.

I have never quite understood why those rich, famous and beautiful people on magazine covers have the privilege of defining new fashion statements. Us average folks wear clothes too, and quite well, thank you very much!  This is where Fashion Street comes in. Each week, I, Emily, your faithful fashion guru here at The What, will check out a new spot in Philadelphia and photograph the looks as they're happening. (Mostly by asking really, really nicely.) Let's get fashion off the runway and onto the streets! I'm excited to hear your comments about this venture, don't be quiet now. Fashion away!

Broad Street, Center City

Dear little readers, this week I took a trip down to the smack-dab center of Philadelphia: Broad St. Not, of course, to be confused with Broadway. But still, loads of funky, art-lovin' folks. (U Arts anyone?)

This week I really wanted to find some sweet boots. You don't know this, kiddos, but I am a huge sucker for boots. Oh yes. Any and all shapes and sizes-it's a miracle of hoardy-ness that I only own one pair! But here are two of my favorites boot finds on Broad:

1. The utility boot! You can scale mountains, squish soda cans to a pulpy-aluminum mess and brave those sloshy winter days without fear. 

2. The trendy boot! You could maybe cross yonder ravine if you were good. Probs. But they're just so gosh darn nice.

Best Dressed Weekly

Oh readers, I have a confession to make - I am super indecisive. I just like too many things. ESPECIALLY when it comes to fashion. It's a horrible curse- it took me hours to sort through photos and pick those two you saw this week (no joke, it's that bad).


And so, in an effort to fix this problem (and give you  more pictures to look at - woot!) I will strive to choose one (yes only ONE) ultra-chic, extra-fab and lucky best dressed person. Here goes nothin'.


Congrats to this week's  leader in style: Girl in Black with Bags! Those yellow leather gloves are my favorite, and the hat! Rock it, girl in black.

48th & Baltimore, West Philadelphia

Oh my dears, as you on the East know this past week has been all winter without the wonderland. Ice and snow galore--but somehow it hasn't stopped my hard-core neighbors in West Philly from lookin' damn good. (What can I say, I'm biased). 






But seriously, I am loving the layers this winter. Check out this guy's stellar grey and black trench combo. Personally, he had me at the sunglasses. What a clever idea!

Cool Things I Saw Online This Week

 

The Weekly Top Five feature sprung out of an article detailing five ways to kill time on the internet (seen here). Therefore, for this week's feature, we decided to revisit that idea and take a look at five really cool things we saw while perusing the world wide web this week.

5. The Graduate Student's Wardrobe - This article from Real Men, Real Style is a handy resource for gentlemen trying to help their wardrobe reach the graduate level. As I mentioned last week, I spent a lot of time this year updating my wardrobe beyond the jeans and tee shirt look and websites such as this one can be a valuable tool in helping you do the same.

4. Dress Like This Guy: Baron Davis - This piece from Effortless Gent recommends that gents try emulating the style of Clippers' point guard Baron Davis. While not everyone can pull off Davis' look, you can still pull of the attitude, which is half of style anyway. The attitude I speak of is the general lack of caring for how others see you. If you are comfortable with your look and style, run with it and make it work.
